The Requirements
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust contacted Portakabin with an urgent requirement for additional space. Insufficient isolation beds in critical care during the pandemic meant that clinical teams had to move patients into theatre and recovery spaces.
The building needed to be installed adjacent to the existing Emergency Department on which renovations were also taking place. The trust needed a partner who could deliver within a quick timescale on a challenging site footprint, making modular an excellent solution.

The Solution
Portakabin delivered a 6-bed intensive care unit compliant to HBN04-02 guidance, tripling the number of isolation beds available in intensive care. The additional capacity will also help with a large backlog of elective surgery, future proofing the critical care service for York.
Key features include a bespoke ventilation system, which provides close room pressure control and HEPA filtration of both the supply air and the exhaust air from the building, independent room control and Nurse calling facilities.
