Modular classrooms are prefabricated buildings which can be specifically designed to meet the exact needs of an educational establishment.

Available to be manufactured off-site and then delivered quickly to your site by Portakabin, a modular classroom that you buy or hire from us can also be upgraded, expanded on and relocated with ease when needs change.

A perfect solution when the educational sector needs to accommodate an ever-growing student population from one education year to the next, modular classrooms can be adapted to suit any part of a school, college or university.

  1. Some of the popular ways that our modular classrooms have been used by teachers and educators in the education sector include:

    • Complete classrooms with toilet facilities – A high-quality, durable space offering modern comfort that can be used across the full education spectrum, whether that is an early-years nursery, a college or a university building.
    • Dining halls – Comfortable, hygienic and welcoming rest areas which are designed with a modern look that is consistent with the rest of an educational establishment.
    • Library space – Open-plan facilities complete with dedicated reading spaces and calm, inspiring rooms. These can be delivered to any size and designed to either be a standalone structure or an extension of an existing school, college or university building.
    • Dance and drama halls – The perfect dedicated space to accommodate an increasing focus on the arts across the education sector, complete with specialist flooring, ceiling heights, lighting and acoustics.
    • Food technology blocks – A fully compliant and specially designed space, allowing it to be fitted out with specialist equipment that meets the practical demands of this subject.
    • Music rooms – A space that can be acoustically enhanced and soundproofed to minimise disruption around a school when music lessons are taking place.
    • Science laboratories – A hygienic, spacious and secure facility, which is fully plumbed in and fitted with power sockets, gas supply points and data connections.
    • Sports halls – A double-height space that is engineered to exceed Department of Education design requirements, as well as fitted with climbing frames, basketball hoops, ropes and more.

Modular classrooms provide a transformative solution to nursery spaces too. Download our free How Modular Buildings Meet Growing Nursery Demands guide to see how this form of construction addresses the unique challenges nursery providers face when working in early education environments.

  2. Benefits of modular classrooms

A modular classroom offers several benefits when compared to a traditional building, such as:

    1. Cost-effective construction – Decision-makers will save money due to the initial outlay and ongoing maintenance costs of temporary classrooms both being faster than permanent builds.
    2. Fast occupancy rates – The modular construction process reduces the build time of a facility substantially, so classrooms can become occupied 70% quicker.
    3. Flexible designs – Both a single classroom and a multi-room facility can be constructed to exact specifications when using a modular build, as well as seamlessly installed into the setup of an existing educational site.
    4. Less disruption to pupils and teachers – The learning environment will face minimal disruption when a modular classroom is being built, as most of the construction work takes place off-site in factory conditions.
    5. No need to worry about weather delays – Another advantage of modular classrooms mainly being built off-site in factory conditions is that construction will not be delayed by bad weather.
    6. It is a sustainable building solution – The off-site construction process of a modular classroom sees less waste being recorded.
  3. Shining the spotlight on modular classroom construction

A standout case study for modular classroom buildings was the work we carried out alongside construction group Mace to build the new Kensington Aldridge Academy.

Based in North Kensington, West London, the temporary six-block school was urgently required by the Education Skills and Funding Agency after the original Kensington Aldridge Academy was closed following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower.

Portakabin and Mace were able to complete the build from start to finish in just nine weeks – deemed the fastest school ever built.

The new modular school had like-for-like facilities as the original site and could accommodate nearly 1,000 students at a location that was only about a mile away from the school’s permanent location.

Praised by former Education Secretary Justine Greening as an “incredible achievement”, you can read much more about the temporary build within our Kensington Aldridge Academy case study
