Last weekend, Portakabin invited a team of keen fundraisers from across the business to take part in the York Rotary Club Dragon Boat race.

Dragon Boat Racing is the world’s fastest-growing water sport and has become popular with charities and fundraisers, with events taking place across the world.

Our team, the Portakabin Paddlers, raced this year in aid of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, the only charity that provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.

Over the past 21 years, the York Rotary Club’s Dragon Boat Race has raised over £1.4 million for local charities. This year, the Portakabin team raised an amazing £1,950.

Thirty-six teams in total competed on the River Ouse for the Challenge Trophy and other awards, including the fastest Charity Team, Commercial Team, and the prestigious “Best Dressed Team" trophy.

Meg Dodd, Marketing Assistant, and ‘drummer’ for the boat said ‘This was my first Dragon Boat Race, and I had a great time. It was a brilliant opportunity to get to know colleagues from around the business and fundraise for an amazing cause. I joined my school rowing team when I was 11 but never actually made it to the water, so I was surprised that I didn’t fall in!’

The team plan to enter the race next year, with high hopes of winning a trophy and beating this year’s fundraising goal. If you would like to learn more about how we work with local communities, please visit our Communities page.
