To support the development of inclusive education across the UK, in July, Portakabin hosted a powerful one-day event ‘Creating Inclusive Learning Environments, to bring together headteachers and school leaders from across the country.
Hosted within one of the manufacturing units at Portakabin in York, the event was designed exclusively for educational leaders committed to making their schools more accessible, inclusive, and supportive for every learner.
Throughout the day, over 40 attendees explored practical strategies and evidence-based approaches to inclusive education. The agenda featured a dynamic mix of expert keynote speakers including Sharon Gray OBE – Inclusive Education Expert, Jess Lees – Speech and Language Therapist, Sarah Woosey – Director at Education Law Experts and Sarah Harridge – Headteacher at Co-op Academy Brierley, as well as hands-on workshops, and panel discussions, all centred around creating learning spaces where every pupil feels seen, supported and empowered to succeed.
Jess Lees commented: “I was so pleased to be part of the day! I was truly blown away by Portakabin, not only by their commitment to creating inclusive learning environments, but also by their values as a company. From sourcing local materials and prioritising sustainability to supporting those in need, their dedication was clear in every detail.”
From real-life case studies to actionable insights, the event offered tangible tools for school leaders to take back to their own communities and implement meaningful change.
“A key theme throughout the day was how both emotional and physical environments foster a sense of safety—an essential prerequisite for effective learning.” Commented Sharon Gray, “I was particularly touched by the courageous leadership and vulnerability demonstrated by all involved in the event, including colleagues across Portakabin—proof that change is possible through purpose and compassion.”
The collaborative format of the day encouraged dialogue and idea-sharing among peers, reinforcing the importance of a networked approach to inclusive education. It also unearthed a series of powerful, and sometimes challenging, reflections on the current state of inclusivity in education, and the steps needed to move forward.
Sharon Gray added: “For children to be truly ready to learn, they need to feel secure in calm, open, and engaged states. Creating a positive school/educational setting is crucial and classroom language should consistently demonstrate warmth and responsiveness.”
In a rapidly changing and often uncertain world, the needs of children are evolving and diversifying. The event highlighted that inclusive learning environments must be flexible and offer different settings and approaches tailored to different individual children, whilst ensuring that these children don’t feel isolated.
“A highlight of the day was witnessing the remarkable environments designed and created by Portakabin.” Said Sharon, “Their spaces exemplify outstanding organisation, creativity, and a deep understanding of how well-designed environments promote well-being and sensory integration.”
The feedback received from this event was overwhelmingly positive, with Aidenswood School Headteacher Stew Davies commenting: “It was a fantastic day, with incredibly inspiring speakers, and it was fascinating to go behind the scenes at Portakabin.”
This event forms part of the on-going commitment by Portakabin to provide innovative, future-ready learning spaces that empowers schools, and communities to thrive – ensuring every child can succeed in a supportive, inclusive environment.
