  1. How we helped

Trinity Academy, a secondary school in Edinburgh, is currently undertaking enabling works as part of their new Passivhaus extension and refurbishment of its original Victorian School. McLaughlin & Harvey were contracted to carry out the project and in partnership with Edinburgh Council, approached Portakabin to provide a temporary school building. Functionality, adaptability, and compliance with strict building regulations were key requirements for this project, alongside an exterior that was fresh and modern.

Portakabin provided a temporary learning environment for over 400 pupils, fully equipped with classrooms, staff support offices, art rooms, and computer suites, as well as lifts to ensure the building is fully accessible to all students. The new teaching facility has been externally cladded with bespoke colours to match other buildings already on site.

The new temporary school exceeds building regulation thermal values by using a ‘fabric first’ approach, meaning that insulation and airtightness has been prioritised to minimise heat loss. Additionally, heat pumps for space heating and cooling, electrical hot water cylinders for water heating, and LED lighting and sensors throughout have been installed in the buildings. The blend of the building’s thermal performance and the technology used meant the building was awarded with an A+ EPC rating, which reduces the overall running cost of the building for the end users.

Having now been in the building for 6 months, and through the winter, it is clear that the quality of the temporary building provided is of a very good standard. It feels far more permanent than temporary, based on the fitting and feel. It operates with a high level of effectiveness as a teaching and administrative block, providing a predictable and pleasant climate for learning.
