The Requirements
Sainsbury's wanted to add a new first-floor extension to its Brentwood store. The new floor would accommodate a customer café, a lobby area for a new elevated car park, customer toilets and baby-changing area, staff facilities and a bulk storage area for general merchandise.

The Solution
The £1.4m modular scheme was completed by Portakabin with main contractors RG Group. The use of the off-site Portakabin Design and Build solution reduced the programme time by four weeks compared to a traditional site-based construction project.
The extension was constructed from 42 steel-framed modules. These were manufactured off site in York and pre-fitted with internal partitions, sanitary-ware, flooring, kitchen equipment, glazing, plumbing, electrics and brick cladding, before they were delivered to site. The modules were installed in just six days, minimising any disruption to supermarket customers.
Richard Rust, Head of Construction and Delivery at Sainsbury’s, says: "By completing as much work as possible ‘off site’, we succeeded in keeping customer car parking to a maximum in this busy trading store. The relationship with RG Group and Portakabin worked well, and the module installation at the store was organised and efficient."
The off-site approach helped reduce customer disruption and programme time on this project, and allowed the first-floor extension to be completed a month earlier than with traditional construction.
