  1. Phase One - 2023

Northumberland County Council had a vision focused on enhancing educational outcomes and creating sustainable, future-proof spaces for schools.

One of the key goals of the brief was to have schools that were safe to build, use, maintain, and demolish, Portakabin was approached to deliver a series of modular classrooms with internal and external spaces for study, work, and play that provided comfort and wellbeing for both pupils and teachers.

In 2023, the Portakabin team successfully completed the installation of modular buildings at five schools, including James Calvert Spence College, Cramlington Learning Village, Seaton Sluice Middle School, Felton First CofE Primary School, and Shilbottle Primary School. These educational facilities included modular classrooms, nursery blocks, and staff rooms designed for modern learning and accessibility.

The Shilbottle classroom, Seaton Sluice Middle School, and Felton First CofE Primary School were part of a project aimed at addressing issues with the condition of existing mobile classrooms by replacing them with new, Portakabin modular buildings.

  2. Phase Two - 2024

As part of its £39 million Coquet Partnership investment, Northumberland County Council aimed to modernise and expand educational facilities to accommodate growing student populations and improve learning environments across the region.

Impressed with the quality, efficiency, and professionalism demonstrated during the 2023 phase, Northumberland County Council extended its partnership with Portakabin to complete four additional schools in 2024, specifically requesting the same delivery and installation team for phase two.

The 2024 modular building installations at Red Row First School, Grange View First School, Amble Links First School, and Broomhill First School all provided further state-of-the-art modular classrooms, group rooms, and medical intervention spaces.

  3. Achieving the Council's vision through modular...

Portakabin used a total of 59 modular buildings to deliver flexible, sustainable, and modern learning environments at each school The modular buildings featured air conditioning, heating, emergency lighting, access control systems, and solar panels to ensure compliance with safety regulations while minimising environmental impact, with some schools complete with brick-like cladding to match the aesthetics of the existing school.

Through this phased approach, Portakabin helped Northumberland County Council achieve its vision of enhancing educational facilities and infrastructure while meeting the aspirations and requirements of those who will be using the facilities the most – it’s pupils and teaching staff. With nine schools now completed, this project highlights the unique ability Portakabin has to deliver turnkey solutions that meet evolving educational needs, to create inspiring spaces for learning, and to provide modern, aesthetically pleasing additions to local communities.

  4. About the Coquet Partnership

The Coquet Partnership represents a strategic initiative designed to strengthen the education system across Northumberland. It seeks to improve learning opportunities and provide schools with modern, adaptable spaces that foster academic success. The partnership also emphasises collaboration among schools to create a unified, sustainable education model that meets the needs of both students and the wider community.

    About Portakabin

Discover more about modular classrooms and how Portakabin can support you on your next education project. Portakabin delivers modular classroom buildings from pre-school nurseries through to colleges and universities.

The final design and project outcomes were exceptional and more than lived up to the expectations of the Council, as client, and the school, as the end user. Given that the construction works were required to be undertaken in a series of live school settings, Portakabin worked tirelessly throughout the whole process to mitigate the impact of the works on both the pupils and the school’s teaching and support staff. In every setting the overall project outcome was excellent and Portakabin, and its employees, were a key contributor to this success.
