One of the UK's first Academy status primary schools, Cuckoo Hall in the London Borough of Enfield, has been recognised twice by Ofsted as outstanding, creating high demand for places. In response, a sister school has been opened by the Cuckoo Hall Academies Trust, under the Government's free schools programme. Additional teaching facilities were required to accommodate the new school's reception and nursery classes until its own building was completed.

The Solution
A permanent-standard, highly sustainable, recycled modular building from Portakabin was in place just nine weeks from receipt of order. Portakabin supplied 10 recycled steel-framed modules; configured as two adjacent teaching blocks to accommodate 120 children in three classrooms and one shared teaching space, for an initial hire period of 12 months.
The buildings feature a decked area, timber cladding, steps, ramps and a covered walkway to the main school and Portakabin undertook all foundations, services and fitting out. This project successfully demonstrates how Portakabin can deliver affordable, flexible teaching accommodation in less time than traditional construction, to help schools address serious place planning issues – and its ability to provide a higher degree of standardisation, which the Government is calling for.
All Portakabin recycled modular buildings are fully refurbished with new windows, wall linings, partitions, mechanical and electrical services, doors, flooring, and cladding, to create high-quality accommodation for a wide variety of interim and permanent education applications.
