  1. Requirement

When the Department for Education (DfE) and the Co-op Academy Trust sought to address a pressing shortage of specialist school places in Leeds, they set out to create a purpose-built, all-through SEND facility that would offer high-quality education closer to home. With local pupils currently being transferred to neighbouring cities like Bradford and Wakefield, the new school needed to cater to both primary and secondary students, providing modern teaching spaces, sensory and therapy rooms, administrative areas, and full sports provision for around 230 pupils.

  2. Solution

Portakabin was appointed to deliver a complete turn-key solution under the DfE MMC Framework. Working to a 60-week timeline, we designed and built a 4,300m² SEND school using 70 precision-engineered Portakabin Ultima modules, complemented by traditionally constructed elements including a hall, kitchen, and offices.

The facility features specialist classrooms, food technology and D&T spaces, sensory rooms, and an external MUGA pitch. Complex site works, including knotweed removal and connection to a district heating main, were carefully managed to ensure a smooth build. The result is a fully clad, future-ready school that supports inclusive learning and meets the growing demand for specialist provisions in the region.

The pace that our new school was built was nothing short of spectacular. This new school will give children with special needs in Leeds a state-of-the-art, custom-built provision with their needs at the heart of every decision made in the build process.
