The Requirements
When an increased intake of students in the Cardiff School of Sport required an expansion of teaching space on campus, Cardiff Metropolitan University needed to act fast to get high-quality facilities completed in time for the start of the new academic year.

The Solution
Using designs drawn up by the University’s architect, Portakabin created a versatile two storey teaching facility using its advanced, energy efficient Ultima buildings. The site for the new building was inside a fully enclosed quad, which meant the modules had to be lifted over the surrounding buildings by crane. Portakabin worked closely with the University’s Estates team to plan a safe installation during the summer holidays, minimising disruption to students and staff.
Hiring a fully fitted and externally clad building from a single supplier reduced procurement and installation time for this project, which helped meet the tight deadline. It provides an extremely flexible teaching environment that has enabled the university to comfortably accommodate an increase in student numbers.
The rapid installation time combined with reduced planning conditions meant we could get the building completed within our limited time-frame. Close liaison with our Estates team ensured that all the challenges associated with site logistics and connections to infrastructure were overcome in a timely manner.
