When the UK went into ‘lockdown’ on Monday 23 March, Portakabin had just completed the offsite fit-out of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB) Primary School and it was on the yard of its manufacturing facility in York. The building was ready to despatch with all groundworks and foundations having already been completed on site. With the restrictions brought in almost immediately, the Health and Safety team at Portakabin designed custom operating procedures, in line with Government guidelines, to enable the IKB team to install the building as planned.
The short term impact of COVID-19 on the productivity of the construction industry could be described as catastrophic. But by limiting the number of operatives on site, the Portakabin team at IKB were able to progress external works, while the challenge of delivering the physical modules to site was finalised. Trades were allocated areas of the site in sequence to ensure social
distancing guidelines were met allowing everyone to continue to operate in a safe working environment.
It was reassuring to see Portakabin was capable of delivering an ‘MMC Solution’ during this challenging time. The team were able to safely manage the risk associated with social distancing on site as well as in its manufacturing facilities to deliver a high quality facility.
