  1. The Need for a Flexible Solution During Major School Renovation


    A major redevelopment project was required at St Finian’s College, in order to refresh and expand its original 1908 school building. During the construction works, lead contractor, JJ Rhatigan, needed a high-quality temporary teaching facility, that could remain securely in place for approximately two years.  

    Supporting uninterrupted learning was essential for this project, meaning that the solution needed to offer modular classrooms, SEND‑specific spaces and dedicated breakout areas for teachers and staff members.  

    Flexibility, speed of installation and minimal disruption were key to ensure that day‑to‑day school life could continue safely whilst the works were underway. 

  2. A Fast, Fully Equipped Modular Solution


    Working in close collaboration with JJ Rhatigan, Portakabin designed, manufactured and installed a fully compliant modular facility comprising of 35 modular units. The project was completed in just 8 weeks, allowing the school to move into its new space quickly and avoid any disruption.  

    The completed modular school building provided a welcoming learning space for St Finian’s College’s students. Including nine modular classrooms, two SEND classrooms fitted with height-adjustable sinks for accessibility, and two dedicated home economic rooms to equip pupils with essential life skills.  

    The project also delivered a staff room, providing teachers a calm space to prepare lessons and recharge, alongside modern toilet facilities and a canteen/kitchenette area to support daily catering needs. 

    Air conditioning was installed throughout the facility, to maintain a comfortable environment. The building was also fitted with a fully compliant fire system and emergency lighting, to help ensure the safety of both students and staff.  

    To ensure the modular facilities were fully compliant, Portakabin completed a MEP design audit, inspection and certification, as well as Part L Reports and BER certification.
