Tesco needed to provide a temporary store in Barnsley for seven weeks to reduce disruption to customers during the redevelopment of its existing superstore. The interim building was then to be moved to a permanent location in Aberdeen.
The Barnsley store was delivered using the Portakabin Design and Build solution. This was the first application of a new 10,000sqft modular supermarket design, developed by Portakabin for Tesco. The project was completed in just 11 weeks from receipt of order to trading – a time saving of around four weeks compared to previous temporary stores.
The new off-site supermarket design is almost three times the size of the convenience stores previously manufactured by Portakabin for Tesco. It has been engineered to increase the level of off-site fitting out and to maximise clear spans in the sales area by reducing the number of internal columns.
The building was constructed from 26 steel-framed modules measuring 14 metres long, which were manufactured and substantially fitted out off-site in York. Ceramic floor tiles, roller shutters, freezers and chillers, shelving, internal walls, plumbing, electrics, mechanical ventilation, sanitary-ware, doors and shop front glazing were all pre-installed in the factory.
The building was installed on site in just three days, and was open to customers less than three weeks later.
The Barnsley scheme has the look and feel of a permanent store, and we have had very positive feedback from both staff and customers. The modular solution allowed us to significantly reduce the cost of providing a temporary supermarket because it will be relocated to a permanent site in Scotland, and it was quicker and easier to install than previous temporary stores.

Key requirements for the project were to incorporate the structure of an existing two-storey modular ward block into the new scheme; to minimise disruption to the adjacent hospital building.
