  1. Requirement

Chorus Education Trust contacted Portakabin in September 2022 as Silverdale School was in need of additional space to increase Year 7-11 mainstream capacity by 300 students as well as to welcome a new cohort of Special Educational Needs (SEN) sixth form students. The Trust was working with Sheffield City Council on the project to expand the number of secondary school places to meet the need in southwest Sheffield.

Alongside a bespoke terrace area, the Trust required dedicated classrooms and additional areas for children to relax outside of lessons, with cladding, bricks and rendering to seamlessly match their current building.

  2. Solution

With time of the essence, Portakabin was able to deliver a solution quickly for a challenging programme, without disrupting learning or regular school activity. Spread across three storeys, dedicated classrooms with amenities such as a kiln and an IT suite were installed along with a platform lift.

Due to excessive rainfall in the Sheffield area, Portakabin designed and implemented a green roof system to capture and repurpose any excess water. A terrace area formed by gabions, has added extra space for children to relax outdoors.

Thanks to the modular structure offered by Portakabin and project management by Gate and Bar, we have been able to complete this significant build within the space of a year, minimising disruption to the school and the local community by concentrating key elements of the work within school holiday periods. We are delighted with our new state-of-the-art facilities.
