  1. Requirements

The new town of Northstowe will eventually be the UK's biggest since the development of Milton Keynes in the 1960s. With 1,200 homes already occupied, an important part of the new development is bringing the local community together. South Cambridgeshire District Council approached Portakabin to design and deliver a temporary community space in partnership with local groups while a permanent structure is built on the adjacent site.

  2. Solution

Complete with external vinyl wrap and canopy, landscaped exterior and cantilever partition in the main hall to allow for mixed use space, the finished centre is a dedicated space for the entire community of Northstowe to use as well as the surrounding areas. The temporary building is available for a range of groups and uses including the local food bank, Rainbows, arts and crafts activities, a youth café, local entrepreneurs, birthday parties, a range of NHS community services and more.

In the few weeks since it was installed, the temporary community centre is already very well used by residents of all ages. The community-inspired artwork wrapped around the building looks excellent. It's impressive inside; a fantastic size with ample space for many kinds of activities. The enclosed rear garden, which will be planted and tended to by members of the community, will be a pleasant addition. This is a wonderful new hub of community life in Northstowe whilst we progress our exciting plans for the permanent community centre.
