  1. The Requirements

As part of the £165m regeneration of Leeds City Station, Network Rail required new platform buildings for Whitehall Triangle, to be used initially for Transpennine Express services calling at Leeds between midnight and 5am. The facilities would also serve some local passenger trains, mainly during off-peak times.

  2. The Solution

Portakabin provided a building constructed using the Portakabin Design and Build solution.

Two modules were manufactured off-site at the Portakabin production centre in York, then craned into position at Leeds station in just two hours over a weekend. This minimised disruption to passenger and freight services and reduced build costs by up to a third.

Jim Busby, Senior Project Manager for Station Regeneration at Network Rail, says: “Because the buildings are manufactured off-site, quality is guaranteed and track possession time is minimised. This has major customer service benefits and can dramatically reduce our construction costs.”

The new building houses a passenger waiting room, public toilets and office accommodation. Internally, the facilities have impact-resistant walls and hardwearing anti-vandal finishes.

Having looked closely at other applications of the Portakabin Design and Build steel-framed modular building solution, such as fast-food restaurants and hotels, it was clear to us that this hi-tech approach to construction could offer Network Rail a number of significant advantages.
