Somers Park School needed a new building to replace its outdated nursery facilities. At the same time, the nursery needed to be merged with the main school, to create a fully integrated 0-11 years learning environment. Portsmouth City Council set about finding a suitable building to meet the school’s budget and quality requirements, and one that would also blend in with the existing school buildings.
The council approached Portakabin to gather information about procuring a modular building and to find out how such a project could be delivered. Portakabin provided detailed guidance on technical and aesthetic issues and drew up some initial plans. When the work was put out to tender, the early support from Portakabin, the quality and appearance of the building it proposed, and the company’s ability to meet the project timescales, were the deciding factors in awarding the contract to Portakabin.
The building developed by Portakabin for the school was created from its Titan Building System, offering a generous floor area of 110m². Inside, the building was configured to provide a large open-plan classroom area, a kitchen facility, and separate toilets for children and staff. Externally, the building was clad in brick to give it a traditional appearance that matched the other buildings at the school, with attractive blue fascias and external columns.
David Harris, Facilities Manager at Somers Park School, says: “The whole project could not have been more straightforward from our point of view. We simply said when we would like the building delivered, and that’s exactly when it arrived. The installation was carried out on a school day and the children were allowed to watch the building being assembled.”
We’ve had a lot of interest from local people, who were very impressed at how fast the building went up and are stunned by the quality of the building. It certainly changed many people’s preconceptions about Portakabin Classroom Buildings.
