The Requirements
Community Health Partnerships approached Portakabin with the aim of achieving the UK’s first health centre to gain the Passivhaus accreditation, a rigorous international low energy design standard. The facility was to be as sustainable as possible, setting the standard for the future of healthcare construction. The brief was also developed to serve an area of inner-city Coventry with high health needs. Foleshill contributes to the Greener NHS carbon net-zero target, has an EPC A rating and is expected to be BREEAM Excellent by Design.

The Solution
Portakabin delivered a two-storey building serving up to 10,000 patients. The new GP surgery has five consulting rooms, two treatment rooms, offices, and a reception and waiting area. Key energy efficient features include air source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, LED lamps and triple glazed windows. It is the first and only British healthcare building to meet the Passivhaus certification, showcasing how MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) plays a vital role in helping the construction industry proactively tackle climate change.
CHP are delighted to achieve the first Passivhaus accreditation for a health centre in the UK. The benefits of Passivhaus will improve the working conditions of staff and the care environment of patients and carers as users of the Foleshill Health Centre for years to come. It is also a key step in delivering on the NHS commitment to Net Zero Carbon.
