Introducing…. Elliot Myers
Elliot is Area Hire Manager at Portakabin Scotland. He joined us six months ago, following sales and hire industry experience with Mercedes Benz and in the construction industry with Speedy Asset Services and Travis Perkins
We spoke to him about his role, plans and challenges serving the northernmost region of Scotland and the Scottish isles.
Passion for quality
I moved from the very north of Scotland to Inverness when Portakabin appointed me. I could very quickly see the passion for the quality of the product and how my knowledge of the construction industry would translate into the role. I like a challenge and love problem solving and it is really satisfying to make sure we’re helping existing and new customers achieve what they want.
Great team
We have a great team here in Inverness, serving an area right down to Fort William and up to the north coast, including the islands. We work closely with the Business Development Team to secure new projects and with the Glasgow office, where Dorothy Lafferty, our support co-ordinator, provides invaluable support on contracts, design and pricing.
Growing business
Private sector work is seeing substantial growth here and in a wide variety of sectors, including cabling, renewable energy and a new freeport. Large scale, high-end projects are the trend and we are also growing our student accommodation business, using an Alta module solution, which is proving extremely popular. North coast Airbnbs are happy to rent in the winter, but in summer are welcoming tourists, so student accommodation is much needed.
Sales for sailors
Our Titan range of single modular buildings is increasingly specified for high-end projects, which recently have included a caravan rental and sales company and a business which teaches boat navigation courses for skippers and crew. The buildings are very much seen as a reflexion of the quality and prestige of the client’s business, particularly when they are looking to expand and require offices, meeting areas and training space.
Modular works
Transporting our products over to the Scottish isles is a particular challenge, but one where our modular solutions come into their own. Boats to the bigger islands – Orkney and Shetland – can take Titan buildings, but for the smaller islands, we’re able to utilise Alta modules which can be transported on the smaller boats. Customers know that both solutions have the highest quality standards and our local knowledge and understanding of client needs mean we can pretty much meet any brief. There’s not much we have to say no to.
And finally…
I go to the gym most nights and when the weather is fine I’ll enjoy a ride out on my motor bike. The rest of my spare time is spent with my partner looking after our two Lhasa Apsos and a Yorkshire Teacup Terrier.
